Facebook Tip: Artist/Brand Pages Get Timeline and Cover Photo Features

Facebook just unveiled some new features for their “pages” functionality in use by artists and brands. They now get the Timeline and Cover Photo features found on all personal profiles. The change will be automatic as of March 30th, but you can get a jump on things and publish your new format whenever you are ready.

If you are an artist that would like some help getting your Topspin Store, Topspin Streaming Players, or Topspin E4M Widgets into your Facebook page, contact Music Geek Services. We can help you out with those tasks.

The provider of the Static HTML tab app, in use by a lot of bands who feature images or widgets on their FB page, is recommending that some may want to wait on implementing this new Timeline for artist/brand pages. Why? Read their full article.

Trick: Social Gifting to Get Your Music Heard

Topspin has a gifting feature as a part of its purchase flow. This was originally created to allow music and merchandise to be purchased as a gift for someone. However, I have seen a few campaigns lately that add a social sharing element to the gifting feature. By setting a price of $0.00 for a track or digital package like an EP, an artist can allow existing fans to easily share the artist’s music in a more personal way than a tweet or Facebook status update.

Incubus recently used the feature on a campaign for their live EP in combination with the Valentine’s Day holiday. They had a button under their e4m widget that encouraged fans to “Send To A Friend or Lover”.

If you are interested in help in setting up a similar campaign, feel free to contact us and find out how Music Geek Services can help you.

Got Tour? Get a Direct-to-Fan Ticketing Grid! Bundle Merch w/Tickets.

We at Music Geek Services love the great VIP/Direct-to-Fan ticketing campaigns that big bands have been offering lately.  We’ve seen excellent campaigns from Umphrey’s McGee to Twin Atlantic to a recent one by Daughtry.  Any band can do this as long as you control at least a portion of the “house”.  To make it really special, bundle a pair of tickets with some merch items — or even better — some exclusive merch or VIP access.

Topspin recently shared the code they use for these ticketing grid pages.  If you are handy with HTML, CSS, graphic design, and a little javascript this should jump-start your campaign.  If you need help, well contact Music Geek Services, we can help you out.

Direct-To-Fan is NOT a Rich Band’s Game | Topspin Media

Reposted from the Topspin Media blog, by Ian Rogers, CEO…

On a panel at SF MusicTech on Monday I made reference to a fact [Topspin] first published back in 2010: while the split between digital and physical sold on Topspin by number of units is 50/50, it’s 75/25 physical/digital by total dollars. This demonstrates a lesson I first learned when I re-started the merchandise division of Grand Royal nearly fifteen years ago: there’s more to the music business than just music and fans are happy to pay for valuable physical goods.  I used to think the Internet’s impact on the music business would be a move to digital and away from physical.  I know now the Internet’s biggest impact is consumer empowerment manifesting in both fan choice and the ability to connect directly with the artists they love.  Trent Reznor opened our eyes to this when he released Ghosts in 2008.  Instead of saying, “Hey stop stealing my digital album!” to his fans he give them choice, from FREE to $300, and said, “How big a fan are you?”

75 Percent of Topspin’s Sales Are Physical… (via Digital Music News)

That’s according to Topspin CEO Ian Rogers, who disclosed the ratio at SF MusicTech Summit. “Physical is 75 percent of my business,” Rogers relayed as part of a broader discussion on physical sales.

But what is ‘business,’ exactly? In a follow-up email, Rogers told Digital Music News that the 75 percent figure does indeed refer to actual revenues – meaning, dollars.  In terms of actual units sold, the digital-to-physical ratio moves towards 50:50.

Ian Rogers: Instead of SOPA, Heres How To Combat Piracy While Encouraging An Open Internet – hypebot

Last weeks Internet-wide SOPA/PIPA protests divided the Internet between content owners looking for stronger anti-piracy tools and technologists who believed the proposed legislation was an overreach. Those opposed said SOPA/PIPA opened the door to content companies taking down sites such as Tumblr and WordPress based on infringement by even one of the sites millions of users. Though I was at AOL/Nullsoft when Gnutella was created I am not pro-piracy by any stretch – half of what our company, Topspin, sells is easily-pirated digital audio and video it could certainly be argued Topspin stands to benefit from SOPA-style legislation and our raison dêtre is helping artists leverage their creativity to build a fan base and earn a living.
